My Installation of Sisterlocks

The day of my installation...

My hair was just washed earlier that morning. Major shrinkage and super thick...

Days before my journey was to begin, I had all kinds of emotions. I was NERVOUS..wondering if this is really what I wanted..and EXCITED all at the same time.

Too much heat...and time!!!!

Here is an example of all the maintenance involved to get that "Straight" look that I thought was so necessary....
This was something that was done on a weekly basis. Can you imagine all the time I spent not to mention all the heat that definitely wasn't healthy for my hair. I have been rescued by the beautiful Sisterlocks!!

My Hair Story

Hello my Sisterlock Family and any newbies who are visiting my blog. This is my first post, so please bare with me. I suppose you are curious as to what made me join the sisterlock movement and what my hair story really is. Well, let's see, where do I start?? lol. I will try to make this as short and sweet as possible.

I have had a perm in my hair from the age of about 10. My hair has always been extremely thick..a blessing and a curse. I have always admired natural hair, but always made the excuse, "My hair is way too nappy for all that, I MUST have a relaxer." I have always been the type to faithfully get a "touch up" on my roots every 5-6 wks. I didn't want any of my beautiful curls popping up, and of course, at the time I didn't find them to be beautiful at all. I wanted my hair BONE STRAIGHT. Sigh. Imagine that??

Living in Atlanta GA, I began to really notice all these beautiful sistas walkin around with a beautiful head of hair. Since I was beginning to have issues with my own, I started paying more attention. I made sure to compliment and always inquired, "What kind of perm do you have?" The answer every time, never fails, they would proudly respond with, "I'm natural, no perm." I thought, how ignorant of me to just ASSUME that these sistas were performing the same compulsive behavior as myself. No, they were flat ironing their natural locs of hair. Ah hah!! It's like a light bulb went on, lol. FINALLY, I got it. No chemicals.

I had been perming my hair up until Oct 2007, when I said, "You know what?? Enuf is enuf." The kicker for me to stop frying my hair was when clumps fell out in the sink as I rinsed the cream from my hair. You got it, over processed to the fullest. How could it not be? I was Ms. "I need a perm on my roots every 5 wks". At that point, I vowed to myself, I am so done with the creamy crack.

Now, I'll be honest. I was way too coward to do the BC. Therefore, I transitioned with my permed ends and flat ironed for the two different textures to work together. I trimmed every 4-6 weeks and soon became lye free:) This worked for me for some time, but I eventually grew very tired of all the maintenance involved and lack of freedom. After getting to know my natural hair and alternating between flat ironed and curly gyrl looks, once I discovered Sisterlocks, I was sold! :)
